Mach9 Secures $34M After Pivot to AI CAD Software

The startup uses AI in civil engineering to automate workflows, turning 3D scans into drawings up to 10 times faster.

San Francisco-based Mach9 has raised $34 million in Series A funding after pivoting from robotics hardware to AI-powered computer-aided design (CAD) software.

The round was co-led by First Round Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from Prudence and existing investor Quiet Capital.

Founded in 2021, Mach9 initially focused on hardware for civil engineering inspections. However, the team discovered that the bigger problem wasn’t collecting data. It was converting that data into usable engineering drawings.

Its platform for AI in civil engineering processes 3D laser scans and images to identify infrastructure features such as roads, curbs, signs, and utility poles, helping engineers automate traditionally time-consuming drafting tasks.

According to the company, its technology can accelerate these workflows by up to 10 times while significantly reducing costs.

Why This Matters

Civil engineering still relies on labor-intensive processes to map infrastructure and prepare project designs. Mach9 wants to change that by bringing AI into an industry where accuracy and efficiency are critical.

The startup’s pivot highlights a broader opportunity for AI companies: solving specific, expensive problems in traditional industries rather than building generic AI tools.

What’s Next?

Mach9 plans to use the new funding to improve its technology, expand its team, and serve more engineering customers.

Its biggest challenge will be competing with established engineering software providers while proving that its AI can consistently deliver reliable, professional-grade results.

The takeaway for founders: Sometimes, the biggest opportunity isn’t in building better technology. It’s in discovering which part of your customer’s workflow needs fixing most.
