Everyone is racing to build smarter AI models. But Fal is making billions by helping those models actually run. And investors are betting big on its business.
The AI infrastructure race just got another major winner.
San Francisco-based startup Fal has raised $1.3 billion in a new funding round at a $16 billion valuation, doubling its previous $8 billion valuation in April 2026.
The Series F round was led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from Nvidia, Sound Ventures, and T. Rowe Price.
The company also revealed that it had previously raised a Series E round led by Sequoia Capital, bringing the combined funding from the two rounds to approximately $1.65 billion. <Cite refs={[“turn151581search0″,”turn151581search1”]}/>
What Does Fal Actually Do?
Unlike OpenAI or Anthropic, Fal isn’t primarily building its own foundation models.
Instead, it provides the infrastructure that allows developers and businesses to run AI models for generating images, videos, and audio.
Think about tools that generate product images, marketing videos, or AI-powered visual content. Every time someone uses these features, powerful computing resources are needed to process the request and generate the output.
This process is called AI inference.
Fal makes it easier for developers to access thousands of AI models through a single API instead of managing expensive GPU infrastructure themselves.
Its customers reportedly include major companies such as Adobe, Canva, and Shopify. <Cite refs={[“turn151581news3″,”turn151581search10”]}/>
Why Are Investors Betting $1.3 Billion?

The biggest reason is demand.
As businesses integrate AI into their products, the number of requests sent to AI models is growing rapidly.
Fal CEO Burkay Gur revealed that demand became so high during the summer that the company had to limit customer usage because it couldn’t serve everyone with its available computing capacity.
According to Bloomberg-reported figures, Fal reached approximately $800 million in annualized revenue earlier this year.
The company plans to use its new funding to expand computing capacity and grow its team. <Cite refs={[“turn151581search0″,”turn151581search1”]}/>
The Bigger AI Infrastructure Race
Fal isn’t the only startup benefiting from this trend.
Companies such as Fireworks AI, Baseten, and Modal are also attracting significant investor interest as businesses look for faster and more affordable ways to run AI models.
The competition is shifting beyond who can build the smartest AI model.
Companies also need reliable infrastructure to deliver AI-generated results quickly, at scale, and without enormous operating costs.
However, inference is an expensive business. GPU infrastructure, computing capacity, and cloud costs can put pressure on profit margins even when revenue is growing rapidly.
What This Means for AI Startups
Fal’s growth highlights an important opportunity for founders.
The AI ecosystem needs more than chatbots and foundation models. It needs infrastructure, APIs, deployment tools, optimization platforms, and services that help businesses integrate AI into everyday operations.
Sometimes, the biggest opportunity isn’t building the technology everyone uses. It’s building the infrastructure everyone depends on.
The takeaway: The AI race is no longer just about creating smarter models. It’s also about who can run them faster, cheaper, and at a massive scale.
