Apple Wants AI to Work Quietly, Not Steal the Show

Apple’s AI Strategy: Why It Won’t Ship AI Just for Hype

Apple AI strategy is taking a different direction from the race to put artificial intelligence into everything.

Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, has made the company’s position clear: it plans to use AI, but it doesn’t want to introduce features simply to follow the latest technology trend.

Ternus says Apple doesn’t want to “ship AI for AI’s sake.” According to him, AI should make products genuinely better. Users shouldn’t have to think about whether a feature is powered by artificial intelligence or traditional software. What matters is whether it is useful and enjoyable to use.

AI Should Improve Products, Not Become the Product

This reflects Apple’s product-first approach. Instead of making AI the centre of every experience, the company wants it to work in the background, making everyday tasks easier. Apple is already integrating AI across its ecosystem through Apple Intelligence. These capabilities include writing assistance, image editing, understanding personal context and helping users interact with apps through a more capable Siri experience.

The company is also emphasising privacy through on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, allowing certain AI tasks to be handled without sending all personal information to external servers.

Will AI Agents Replace Apps?

Another big question surrounding the future of AI is whether AI agents could eventually make traditional apps unnecessary.

Ternus acknowledged that AI agents could simplify certain experiences, but highlighted the human side of creating products. His perspective suggests that Apple sees AI as a way to improve how people interact with technology, rather than automatically replacing the apps and products they already use.

A Different Way to Compete in the AI Race

Apple has faced criticism over the pace of its AI development, particularly around delays to its more capable Siri experience. However, Ternus has reiterated that the company will continue using AI in its products where it adds value.

The bigger question is whether this approach will translate into experiences users genuinely prefer. As AI becomes more common across devices and software, the companies that make it genuinely useful could stand out from those simply adding AI labels to existing features.
