Apple Just Put an 18+ Label on AI Romance. Dating Apps and AI Companions Face New Rules

Your AI boyfriend, virtual girlfriend, or digital dating partner might soon come with an age restriction. Apple is tightening its App Store rules, and this time, AI companion apps are directly in its sights.

AI companions are becoming increasingly popular. From virtual friends and romantic partners to AI characters that users can customize, people are building relationships with software in ways that were difficult to imagine just a few years ago.

But Apple is drawing a new boundary.

On November 2, 2026, Apple announced new App Store age-rating requirements that will classify apps offering dating and romantic relationship features as 18+, including experiences involving virtual AI companions.

The changes are part of Apple’s broader effort to improve online safety for younger users.

What Exactly Is Apple Changing?

Starting November 16, 2026, Apple will introduce two new content descriptors in App Store Connect.

Developers will have to disclose whether their applications include:

1. Dating and Relationships

Apps that allow dating or relationship connections between real people, or between users and virtual companions engaging in sexual or romantic content, will receive a minimum age rating of 18+.

2. Shared Location

Apps that allow users to share their real-world location with another person or group will also need to declare this functionality.

However, location-sharing features will not automatically trigger an 18+ rating everywhere. Local regulations will determine the applicable age classification in certain markets.

Apple has given developers until January 12, 2027, to complete the updated declarations for all their apps.

Why Are AI Companion Apps in the Spotlight?

This is where the announcement gets particularly interesting.

AI companion platforms allow users to create virtual characters that can communicate, remember conversations, respond emotionally, and even simulate romantic relationships.

Platforms such as Character.AI and Replika have helped popularize this category.

Some AI companion experiences also allow users to create virtual boyfriends, girlfriends, and other relationship-based characters.

While these products are often marketed as entertainment or companionship tools, their growing popularity among younger audiences has raised concerns about age-appropriate interactions and online safety.

Apple’s updated policy makes it harder for apps offering these romantic and sexual AI experiences to be classified for younger audiences.

Importantly, this does not mean every AI chatbot or general-purpose AI assistant will automatically receive an 18+ rating. The classification applies to apps with the specific dating and relationship functionality described by Apple.

What Does This Mean for AI Startups?

Apple’s decision could have significant implications for companies building AI companion products.

Startups developing virtual characters, relationship simulators, and AI-powered social experiences may need to reconsider their target audiences, age-verification systems, product features, and App Store positioning.

For developers, this means:

  • Age-rating compliance: Apps with qualifying romantic or dating features must carry an 18+ rating.
  • Product changes: Companies may need to reconsider how their AI characters interact with younger users.
  • Developer compliance: All apps must complete Apple’s updated content declarations by January 12, 2027.

For early-stage startups, these requirements could also mean additional compliance and product-development costs.

Apple’s Bigger Message: AI Safety Is Becoming a Business Requirement

The AI industry has spent years competing to build smarter, more engaging, and more human-like systems.

But as AI becomes increasingly personal, questions around user safety, privacy, emotional dependency, and interactions with minors are becoming harder to ignore.

Apple’s latest move signals that app stores and technology platforms are taking greater responsibility for how these products are classified and accessed.

It also puts pressure on AI startups to think about safety much earlier in product development rather than treating it as an issue to address after launch.

The Bigger Picture

AI companions are becoming a new category of consumer technology, and Apple is making it clear that platforms offering romantic relationships with virtual characters need stronger age boundaries.

For AI startups, the message is straightforward: building an engaging AI product is no longer enough. Companies must also consider who can use it, what interactions it enables, and whether those experiences are appropriate for their audience.

The takeaway: The next big challenge for AI companies may not just be making AI more human. It will be making sure that human-like AI is built and used responsibly.
